What is Pyrography?
Pyrography is the ancient art of burning images into wood. With a variety of hot tips attached to a special pen, I can create an imaginary scene or bring to life an owl or other animal. Small pieces usually take a couple of hours to complete and larger pieces take several hours over a few days or weeks as the images come to life. Sometimes I create strange images as they appear with the grain of the wood or the design of neighbouring creatures. Other pieces such as owls require a very specific design and a pencil sketch before burning.
Each pyrography is distinct and unique. It is impossible to replicate an exact copy because the wood grain differs and the attitude in the eyes or posture creates an individual work.
The Owls and other animals often have a loop to hang them up on a wall, in a window, or wherever you would like to see both sides – or flip them around to see the other side once a month or once a year!
It is very satisfying to see an image come alive before my eyes!
