Stairway at the Abbey in St. Hilaire, France
This ancient stairway at the old Abbey in St. Hilaire, France, was built about 1100 AD. This abbey was on the route to the Holy Land and was a refuge for pilgrims throughout the Middle Ages. Guests were served meals in silence while listening to a monk read passages from The Bible in Latin.
This pyrography is based on a photo I took while visiting this beautiful and peaceful place in the Langedoc region near the foothills of the Pyrenees.
This scene is burned by hand onto a basswood plank, 11" x 7", and finished with three layers of clear polyurethane.
